Floating Fountain is a passion project of mine, working from old footage shot during my MA Digital Effects degree at Bournemouth. I had kept the original source files and wanted to redo the water simulation.

The original version was my first fluid sim in Houdini, and let's just say it was not as graceful and elegant as I intended it to be.

3 years later I revisited this project to breathe new life into it.

The fluid simulation was split up into two separate pieces. This simplified the process of achieving the desired results, as I only had to worry about 2 or 3 aspects at once instead of 5 or more.

I took the incoming velocities of the points at the bottom of the first sim (where they would impact the water in the basin), and reflected those vectors with a bit of noise. That was then used as a velocity source in the second sim.
